Frequently asked questions.

Music Licensing

Q1: Do I need a music licence for my business?
If you play recorded music in your business — through a speaker, TV, radio, or streaming service — then yes, you most likely need TheMusicLicence. This licence is issued by PPL PRS Ltd and covers music played for customers, staff, or general background ambiance.

Q2: What is TheMusicLicence and who are PPL and PRS?
TheMusicLicence covers the rights of both performers and songwriters. PPL collects royalties for performers and record labels, while PRS for Music represents composers, songwriters, and publishers. Together, they authorise the use of music in public or commercial spaces.

Q3: I only play music for staff. Do I still need a licence?
Yes. Music played in shared or open workspaces counts as public performance under copyright law. It applies even if only staff members can hear it.

Q4: What happens if I don't get a licence?
You could receive letters, calls, or invoices from PPL PRS. They may charge you retrospectively or escalate the issue through legal means. Many businesses assume they are exempt when they are not. It’s always safer to confirm your licensing requirements in advance.

Q5: Are there any exemptions?
You may be exempt if:

  • No music is played in any form, including via TV or radio

  • Only royalty-free or exempt music is used from licensed sources

  • The business space is fully private with no music exposure to staff or customers

We can help you determine if any of these exemptions apply to your business.

Q6: Do I need a licence if I use Spotify or YouTube in my business?
Yes. Personal streaming services like Spotify, YouTube, and Apple Music do not provide commercial licensing. If you play music for the public or in a business setting, you still need TheMusicLicence.

Pricing & Fees

Q7: How much does a music licence cost?
It depends on your business type, floor area, and how music is used. Typical examples:

  • Small office: from around £128 per year

  • Gym or café: from around £321 per year

We work with you to ensure you are on the correct and most cost-effective tariff.

Q8: Can you help reduce my current licensing costs?
Yes. Many clients are unknowingly on the wrong tariff or have been overcharged. We assess your current setup and look for ways to reduce costs, often with significant savings.
